Sustainability

The European liquid gas industry is committed to sustainable and responsible business practices, and acknowledges the importance of aligning its efforts with the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and relevant European policy objectives.

To further its commitment to sustainability, the industry developed a sustainability charter based on an Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) framework. This charter outlines the common commitments the industry intends to make and implement in its operations and organisations.

We are determined to contribute to the energy transition and decarbonisation of the economy. Our aim is to foster a better society, promoting social inclusion and governance practices.

Liquid Gas Europe is eager to work with all stakeholders to achieve this by collaborating and leveraging our collective resources to nurture positive change.

The role of liquid gases

For more than 70 years, liquid gases have been a cost-effective and lower-carbon solution for the energy requirements of individuals and businesses, particularly those located in remote areas. Additionally, they have proven to be one of the most widely used alternative fuels in transportation.

Whilst conventional LPG is derived from petroleum or natural gas refining, low-carbon and renewable alternatives are rapidly being developed. Renewable LPG, for instance, is already available in growing quantities today as a drop-in replacement for LPG, with a carbon footprint reduction of up to 80%. We are actively working to increase its availability and use on the market.

Other pathways to produce renewable liquid gases, such as renewable LPG, and renewable and recycled carbon Dimethyl ether (DME), are also under development. The liquid gas industry is fully committed to providing fully decarbonised energy solutions by 2050. We have a clear roadmap in place to achieve this ambitious goal.
