Standardisation

The standards that govern the storage, distribution, and use of LPG liquid gases are not static.

They are continuously developed, reviewed, and revised by Technical Committees (CEN in the EU). This process ensures that the standards stay up to date and relevant. Moreover, these standards have been updated to accommodate the introduction of new, renewable liquid gases and blends, reflecting the industry’s commitment to sustainability.

Liquid Gas Europe plays a crucial role in the process of developing standards. We diligently monitor the development, review and revision of relevant standards, primarily those set by the European Committee for Standardization (CEN) and the International Organization for Standardization (ISO). We aim to ensure these standards consider the specific characteristics of the LPG industry wherever possible to make industry operations safer, simpler, and more efficient. We actively contribute to revising and developing new standards, particularly those that support introducing new renewable liquid gas products and blends.

While basic standards and the Transportation of Dangerous Goods (TODG) Regulation are an integral focus for the association, Liquid Gas Europe is also actively engaged in standardisation activities associated with introducing new, lower-carbon alternatives to conventional LPG. We are committed to supporting the industry’s transition to more sustainable energy sources. In some cases, these products are drop-in replacements, requiring little, if any, change to standards, while in others, adaptations – and thus revised standards – are required.
